26 Men Commit Suicide After Being Sexually Abused By Same Catholic Priest

id=”attachment_9599″ Bishop Peter Connors says it was unclear that raping children was inappropriate.

Australian police believe at least 26 victims of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest, Brother Robert Best, have committed suicide after attending schools at which he taught.

Twenty-six.

Best will be sentenced on Monday for 27 charges involving 11 other boys that he raped between 1969 and 1988.

Australian police in Victoria are calling for a parliamentary inquiry into the deaths of Best’s victims. To which the church responded something along the lines of, “I mean, I guess you can investigate if you really, really want to. But surely there’s no need!”

“If it helps the victims I’d be more than happy for it to go ahead,” Bishop of Ballarat Peter Connors told AAP.

“I don’t think they’ll learn very much more … I’m convinced we’ve done the best we can in more recent years.”

But Bishop Connors on Tuesday said not even revelations from Detective Sergeant Kevin Carson that 26 young men had killed themselves after being abused by priests and brothers in Ballarat convinced him that more would be learnt from an inquiry.

“I think we’ve learnt a lot of things about what is appropriate behaviour and what’s not appropriate behaviour,” Bishop Connors said.

While conceding the abuse of children was wrong, he said that in the past it had not always been clear to everyone what was appropriate and inappropriate behaviour.

“In the past a lot of ignorance was there on the part of lots of people. Parents didn’t understand, sometimes bishops didn’t understand. We have no excuse now.”

As to whether there was an excuse when Ridsdale and Best were abusing boys, Bishop Connors said he did not know.

I’m sorry, is this bishop’s excuse seriously that raping children was once upon a time not immediately understood to be illegal, immoral, and just heartbreakingly evil?

This story marks the second we’ve covered this week alone on UB about the child-raping priests coming out of the Vatican. The Catholic Church Child Protection Chief was recently arrested for making and distributing child porn via his church-issued work laptop. Yes, the guy in charge of keeping kids safe from sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is going to jail for making, possessing and distributing child pornography.

And forgive me, but I just cannot make it through a story about the Catholic Church without bringing up the fact that it employs the largest number of sex offenders out of any business or organization in the world. Why this is tolerated is beyond me. If Apple had thousands and thousands of rapists designing iPhones, the company would cease to exist. Yet the Catholic Church employs and protects these rapists, and the world continues to give them money and count them as beacons of morality.

Insanity.

Our deepest condolences go out to the victims of Brother Robert Best, and those left to grieve the loss of their loved ones.

  • … So wrong. Seriously, that’s his excuse?

“Oh sorry, I didn’t know it was inappropriate!” … That’s such shit.

  • Sure. Suicide, like anything else, has genetic as well as environmental causes. However, the population-wide suicide prevalence rate is 1.01%. You can defend Catholics all you want, but calling 26 suicides all linked to one set of schools “largely genetic” is a very unlikely explanation, especially if childhood sexual abuse is suspected. Besides, I was certain we were denouncing child sexual abuse here, not hating against Catholics.

  • actually, in years passed, reports of sexual abuse generally were mishandled because people didnt understand how to handle it. more than 20 years ago, it wasnt appropriate nor was it widely accepted to discuss sex in any way shape or form. since that was the case, when one reports sexual abuse in that kind of social atmosphere, people in authority dont know how to look at it. its unfortunate but its a fact. and this fact even applies to the catholic church hierarchy. you could report sexual abuse but over 30 years ago, nothing would be done because literally nobody knew what to do. there are stories even about reporting rapes to the police and some precincts still did not understand how to handle these cases. often times, nothing was done, rapists went free, and victims had to live with the trauma. it does not excuse the church hierarchy but its part of the reason why nothing was done. its most unfortunate but if the church would just progress and get with the times, things could be better handled.

I call BS on this story and the 26 suicides.  Suicide is largely genetic for one and how does anyone prover this.
    More hate against Catholics.

you’re joking right? Molestation and rape and the horrid memories that those acts cause are alright? they just coincidentally killed themselves because its genetic, not because he molested and raped them? I get it now. just my years of psychology classes have never pointed me in the genetic suicide direction

I work directly in suicide intervention within the community and I am sorry to say that you could not be more misguided. Depression and mental illness can definitely have biological causes but that does not always mean genetic and by genetic I am assuming you are meaning they inherited their illness from a parent. You seem to have made a horrifying implication that somehow it is more okay for someone to kill themselves because they are mentally ill as opposed to a victim of crime. Even if you believe this, which I hope you do not, statistics show more often than not that people kill themselves because of life circumstances. Children raised through sexual abuse are also statistically at a much higher risk for suicide. You asked how someone proves this. People don’t just kill themselves before trying to get help. I am sure that these victims reached out to friends, family, and professionals. All of these people can account for what was said to them. Also do you want to live in a society where the burden of proof lies on children who have been sexually assaulted instead of a perpetrator?  At least 26 of his victims have killed themselves. I think the burden of proving his innocence should lie with the priest alone. I don’t think anyone wants to just hate on the Catholic Church, but it is attitudes like yours where Catholics are still sticking their heads in the sand and screaming that nothing is wrong that causes people to have so  much moral infuriation directed towards these supposed people of god.

yea of course, we also all know being rape in your childhood have ABSOLUTELY no consequences whatsoever on your psychology and self-esteem. And it’s not hate against Catholics, but more proof against the Catholic CHURCH which his, let me remind you, the employer of “the largest number of sex offenders out of any business or organization in the world”.

If suicide was genetic, it would have killed itself out of the gene pool hundreds of years ago. Every one who had it wouldn’t survive it. Duuhhh.

Just makes me crazy. Can you imagine the uproar if this was a school district? Imagine principals and teaching across a district, across the nation raping children and then being moved from school to school, or state to state when suspicion got too high? We’d have congressional inquiries, mass arrests, the closure of districts and busing kids to other areas. When it’s the church people poo poo it, roll their eyes, shrug their shoulders and think, “those catholics…..” One institution raping and molesting thousands upon thousands of children in numbers NAMBLA can only fantasize about and yet it creates barely a blip on the national stage because it’s a church. What? A hundred more children? Tsk, tsk…….

    How the Jesuit
Order handled the suspicious death of a priest

    In regard to
sexual assault and suicide: After the suspicious death of a priest the Jesuit
Order issued a news release claiming that the priest committed suicide. The
deceased priest previously reported he was a victim of sex abuse by a Jesuit.
Fr. Thomas Smolich, now the top USA Jesuit leader, said that the Jesuit Order
had more of a right to the priest’s body than the family. The last Jesuit to
see the deceased priest alive was Fr. Jerold Lindner. It was reported that Fr.
Lindner made death threats to children. The Jesuit Order paid $2 million to
settle sex abuse allegations involving Fr. Lindner. Fr. Lindner was also active
    in Boy Scouts.

  • The definition of a destructive religious cult is like alcoholism-if booze controls you instead of the other way around you are an alcoholic.
The Watchtower society Jehovah’s Witnesses as an example is not benevolent and won’t let you leave their organization in peace.
If they try to ruin your reputation and break up your family for trying to get out then they are a cult!
Please examine the Jehovah’s Witnesses pedophiles go door to door and come on our property.
Many court documents and news events prove that Jehovah’s Witnesses suppress evidence when a child comes forward with allegations of molestation within the congregation.Whenever you surrender your logic and reason to anyone who asks you to trust them because they know better it’s possibly a cult.

  • If homosexuality is a sin, and if this priest is running around raping boys (and this just isn’t the liberal media distorting facts), then this would be the Lord’s way of getting rid of 26 birds with one stone.

When there are less gay people around at the end of all this, then I don’t see the problem.

  • Michael From Seattle

Anti-sex bigotry and ageism, not the priest, is the real culprit in leading these people to commit suicide.

Welcome ot the church that doesnt want gays to be able to marry.

So they can claim gays are sexually frustrated and are child rapists.

Totally ignoring that the churches sex starved, power hungry priests – at least in the USA – about 6000 of them raped chidlren – about 10%

In Pscyhology its called “sexual Immaturity – people brought up in very religious households where even discussion of sex is forbidden – ultimately about 10% of them go bad and go after victims at the age when they were denied information etc about sex.
