Ad Week: The 50 Gayest Ads Ever

For whatever reason, advertisers are still reluctant to include gays and lesbians in their mainstream advertisements. Advertisers that do are sometimes handsomely rewarded by the gay community – and sometimes roundly criticized for their inaccurate or stereotypical portrayals of the LGBT community.

David Griner at Ad Week has taken the deep dive into GLAAD’s comprehensive Commercial Closet archive and put together a fantastic article called “The 50 Gayest Ads Ever.”

He has broken them up into thematic strings:

  1. Surprise, he/she is gay
  2. Don’t tell mom
  3. Swings both ways
  4. Actually straight
  5. Lesbians are hot
  6. Activist
  7. Inclusive

50 ads is a lot of ads to watch, but Griner has done an excellent job at pointing out some of the gems – and some of the epic fails – of the advertising industry.

Thanks for the kind words and feedback, Nick. That was a fun project to put together.

  • That is the cutest ad ever. Why can’t America be that cool?

  • Laurie Edwards

That’s adorable. That’s a family. I’d love to see that commercial playing on television amongst all the other regular product ads.

  • Stephanie Timmons

That first one is absolutely precious. I love how imposing “Mum” is as well, lol.
