Amar’e Stoudemire on Having a Gay Teammate: ‘I’d Shower Across the Street’ (Video)

We can’t really be shocked that former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire spewed some stupid, homophobic bullshit, because he’s done it before.

Back in 2012, the former Knicks power forward, currently playing for Hapoel Jerusalem, an Israeli basketball club, was fined $50,000 for calling one of his fans a “fag” on Twitter. (Seriously, check out the screengrab below.)

He eventually issued an apology for the remark, saying, “I am a huge supporter of civil rights for all people. I am disappointed in myself for my statement to a fan. I should have known better, and there is no excuse.”

But it looks like some habits die hard.

Just this week, during an interview with Israeli site Walla Sport, a newscaster asked several players how they’d react to having a gay teammate. Every other player on camera shrugged off the question like it was a total non-issue. Stoudemire’s answer was saved for last:

“I’m going to shower across the street, make sure my change of clothes are around the corner, and I’m going to drive — take a different route to the gym.”

Asked if he was joking — the guy was very literally given the chance to backtrack his ignorant statement — he pressed his point: “I mean, there’s always a truth within a joke.”

What an ass.

And the cherry on top: Stoudemire homophobic remarks came just days after Israel bestowed him with its prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. award for his work with underprivileged kids.
