Anti-Gay Michele Bachmann Uses Katy Perry’s Gay Anthem Firework For Campaign

Boom boom boom. Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon.

Openly anti-gay Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann used Katy Perry’s pro-gay #1 hit song, “Firework,” as her theme song at the ultra-conservative Right Online conference over the weekend. Perry’s “Firework” video is infused with self-acceptance stories, includes a scene of two young men kissing. Perry’s other hit songs include, “Ur So Gay,” and, “I Kissed a Girl.”

Firework, as many of you remember, was dedicated to Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project, the organization that exists to convince young LGBT people not to end their lives over the terrible nonsense homophobes inflict upon them. Nonsense like these greatest hits from Bachmann:

  • “If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement.” — Senator Michele Bachmann, speaking at EdWatch National Education Conference, November 6, 2004.
  • “It isn’t that some gay will get some rights. It’s that everyone else in our state will lose rights. For instance, parents will lose the right to protect and direct the upbringing of their children. Because our K-12 public school system, of which ninety per cent of all youth are in the public school system, they will be required to learn that homosexuality is normal, equal and perhaps you should try it. And that will occur immediately, that all schools will begin teaching homosexuality.” – Senator Michele Bachmann, on what will happen if her same-sex marriage ban amendment fails to pass in 2004, appearing as guest on radio program “Prophetic Views Behind The News,” hosted by Jan Markell, KKMS 980-AM, March 6, 2004
  • “This is a very serious matter, because it is our children who are the prize for this community, they are specifically targeting our children.” — Senator Michele Bachmann, on the gay community and same-sex marriage, appearing as guest on radio program “Prophetic Views Behind The News”, hosted by Jan Markell, KKMS 980-AM, March 20, 2004.

Lovely woman, eh? Expect Katy Perry to issue a statement disavowing her connection to Bachmann’s campaign any moment now.

This is disgusting.  She’s using a song about overcoming oppression and challenges when she is actively pushing for more oppression and challenges.  How obtuse can these people be?  The KKK may as well have Kanye and 50 cent do their next campaign.  These people are so ridiculous that I can’t believe they have so much support in the US.

“Expect Katy Perry to issue a statement disavowing her connection to Bachmann’s campaign any moment now.”
This disavowal is all the more necessary since we all assumed that Katy Perry was part of the Bachmann campaign. *S*

  • Good gods this woman is retarded. If she ever becomes president, I’m leaving the planet.

  •  Can I come with you?

  • I tweeted at Katy Perry a bunch. Let’s hope she sees them and does something about it. I urge you all to do the same!. @katyperry:twitter @evanleerox:twitter

If this lady gets elected President I’m moving to Canada!

  • First of all, The only personal enslavement that we as a community endure, is the enslavement towards our progression that has been forced upon from our American government.

Second of all, the same way our school system currently holds no curriculum towards teaching “heterosexuality,” it is safe to say that to make a notion that our school system will implement “homosexuality” within our curriculum is simply ignorant. More importantly it serves as an illustration of a lack of knowledge towards the function of our educational system.

Third of all, no one is after our kids. I use the word “our” because I myself hold a high position within our school system, and I see those kids as my kids as well. I can strongly affirm that the only thing we care about within our educational system is the progression and advancement of our children’s ACADEMIC careers, not their sexual preference.

You should strongly think about dropping from the presidential race. As a gay republican, you are a true an embarrassment towards our political party and our nation as a whole.

    Shame on you.

Wow, thanks, I’d not seen that video.  I loved it.

Also, no matter who the Republican candidate ends up being in this election cycle, there are good odds that they’ll simply be filler on the ticket.  Bachmann is a cruel woman who uses fear and deep-seated prejudices to push for favor of her own camp.  She’s the ultimate in feminine seduction, using the safety of her motherly charms to calm and disguise the venom that she flings on a regular basis.  That’s a typical staple of conservative Christians; from a heartily comfortable podium, they espouse damning criticism of people who don’t fit squarely into their way of life.  Anyone who objects can be easily put on the alter as a pariah–sacrificed and forgotten.

That line is growing thinner and thinner; eventually there won’t even be a hint of safety to her words.  Persecute one group, and you break the caveat that all the rest are safe.  You can’t have both; to follow her way is to open the door to widespread hatred of one or more minorities, and there aren’t as many steps in-between that and another Kristallnacht as one might think.  You either have freedom in America, or you don’t.  Her kind refuse to understand that, however.

”When we came,” to borrow from Roberto Mangabeira Unger, “they were like a priesthood that had lost their faith and kept their jobs. They stood in tedious embarrassment before cold altars. But we turned away from those altars and found the mind’s opportunity in the heart’s revenge.”  Even though Unger was referring to law professors, the sentiment is the same.  Fewer and fewer will mark the coming of people like Bachmann as her cruelty becomes less sweetly swept behind a mother’s facade.

  • Just when you think someone couldn’t get any dumber…..

Political campaigns have received legal notice from musical artists time and again for making use of an artist’s music without consent.  Now the real ironic part…those politicians are usually REPUBLINAZI…you know, the pro-corporation’s have rights political party. Yet they act suprised when an artist’s lawyer contacts them about copyright and royalty issues.  Go figure.

  • trust me we have Stephen harper you do not want to move here, unless its for someone you love or so on and by a very good reason. harper is just as bad so i suggest a good excuse.

  • Laura Lee Chimera

…um, if I am correct (and I KNOW I am) you can’t “teach” homosexuallity!
She sure could learn a lot from the GLBT community, like ignorance breeds CONTEMPT???

  • Stephanie Timmons

I shared it on her Facebook page, hopefully more will do the same!

  • That woman is an idiot.

  • Lorenzo Van Ness

I’ve never associated Katy Perry with Pro-gay anything but if y’all say so.

  • Ian Harries

Another dangerous woman – world, beware … HP protect us from this fear-mongering virago of a power-grabber.

  • Oh yeah –  a song about the isolation of the American working class. It was as outlandlishly ironic as this situation.

Both instances scream that the Republican Party is terribly disconnected from The People. And yeah, they need lessons in art appreciation.

  • Jason Vajgrt

Anyone remember the controversy when Reagan (the Republinazi messiah) used Born In The USA for his re-election bid?

  • Jason Vajgrt

Wow, Katy Perry’s boobies really ARE magical!

“they will be required to learn that homosexuality is normal, equal and perhaps you should try it. And that will occur immediately, that all schools will begin teaching homosexuality.”

Gotta say, I burst out laughing pretty hard at that.

You know, I was OVERWHELMED as a little boy with the straight community in my school, and my media, and my life, but somehow, it didn’t turn me straight.

    U Mad Michele?

  • Scott Thompson

She mostly just exploits it for her own gain.

  • Sadie Morgan

Who owns the rights to this song?  Did they get permission to use it? If not, SUE THEIR ASS!

  • Emily Phillips

So HAS Kay Perry told this woman off yet? Because if she hasn’t, she’s just as guilty.

Just shows the intelligence level of the republicans.

Well, you can’t teach someone to be gay, but you sure can teach them to do it right.  😉
