Ty Fleming and Tyler Garrison got engaged at Friday’s Washington Nationals baseball game, with the help of the team.
“The moment Ty Fleming and Tyler Garrison became officially engaged was captured during the Washington Nationals versus Pittsburgh Pirates game,” The Washington Blade reports. “The crowd cheered for the happy couple, who even received a congratulations hug from Screech the mascot.”
Team spokesperson Jennifer Giglio said the team had worked with one of the men, coordinating the surprise proposal with the team production department and mascot.
YouTube comments for the proposal were mostly positive: “Fantastic!! So great to see their love of each other. Good luck guys and have a happy life together.”
Another person wrote, “I love it when I see happy faces and people can be who they are without being discriminated. So lovely, heart warming and openly awesome, to see fellow LGBTQ+ finally have a chance at life. Wonderful.”
The Dodgers made history in May 2015 by featuring possibly the first ever same-sex couple to smooch on a Major League Baseball game kiss cam. Earlier this year, they made even more history by featuring numerous same-sex couples on their kiss cam during their fifth annual LGBT Night.
At the LGBT Night, the Dodgers threw a pride kickoff party in the stadium with Los Angeles Pride before the game. They also had openly gay actor Matt Bomer throw out the ceremonial first pitch and had the following people as special guests: Brian Pendleton, the founder of the L.A. #ResistMarch; openly gay actors Noah Galvin and Guillermo Diaz; and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, the plaintiffs in the case that eventually overturned California’s anti-LGBTQ marriage law, Proposition 8.
