Hakuna Matata! Billy Eichner is Timon in ‘The Lion King’ Remake

Disney’s plans to remake their ’90s classics as live-action continues with some great news: The Jon Favreau-helmed The Lion King just named its Timon and Pumbaa: Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen!

The Wrap is reporting that the two actors have just entered into final negotiations to appear in the film.

The new film is set to star Donald Glover as Simba. James Earl Jones will be reprising his role from the original film as Mufasa, Simba’s father.

If somehow, you’ve made it this far without seeing Disney’s The Lion King — it’s basically a happier Hamlet. The story follows Simba, the son of the king (of the jungle) and the rightful inheritor of the throne.

Unfortunately for him, his evil uncle Claudius Scar murders Mufasa and takes his place on the throne. Simba goes on a quest and ultimately reclaims his country helped, as Hamlet originally was, by a warthog and meerkat. Ah, Shakespeare!

This year’s Beauty and the Beast did very well for Disney — in its first week, the film earned $490.6 million. That’s $65 million more than the total earnings of the original cartoon. (According to Vanity Fair, the original figure is $760 million in today’s dollars — however the remake has currently made $1.1 billion worldwide.)

If you haven’t noticed, Billy Eichner’s gotten really busy lately. Between his own shows, Billy on the Street and Difficult People, the latter of which comes back this August — he’s also appearing in the next season of American Horror Story.

Given his amazing voice, we can’t wait to hear him tackle “Hakuna Matata.”

Sadly, we’ve got some time to wait; Jon Favreau recently announced The Lion King would premiere in the summer of 2019. We’ve got a few more live-action Disney remakes on the horizon, though — including Mulan by Niki Caro, which is coming in November of next year.

Other Disney remakes coming include Mary Poppins and The Little Mermaid (both of which have Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda attached), Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin and a version of Dumbo from Tim Burton — who also did the forgettable 2010 remake of Alice in Wonderland.

The Lion King is set to premiere July 19, 2019.
