Britney Spears musical Broadway 03

Britney Spears May Soon Have Her Own Broadway Musical

Right now, pop-diva Britney Spears is wrapping up her two-and-a-half-year run at the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood where she has been performing her show entitled, Britney: Piece of Me. The reviews for the show haven’t always been so flattering, but that’s no matter. Her managers have already begun planning her post-Vegas career move … and it could land Spears in her own Broadway musical.

Forbes.com reported that Spears’ managers, Larry Rudolph and Adam Leber, have been speaking with Jerry Mitchell, the theatrical director behind Kinky Boots and Legally Blonde: The Musical, about staging a musical featuring Spears’ biggest hits.

Anyone hoping to see a story about Spears’ humble beginnings in kindergarten dance lessons and The Mickey Mouse Club alongside Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake will be disappointed because Mitchell has said that the musical will not be biographical. Rather, it would arrange her biggest hits in a fictional narrative, kind of like Mamma Mia! did with ABBA’s songs.

Right now, Britney: The Musical (not the actual title) is purely in the discussion phase, so it’s unclear when the show might hit Broadway or whether Spears would perform in it (though surely she would, at least at the beginning, right?). However, if it does happen, her musical would join the pantheon of other Broadway musicals using songs from real-life musicians.

Other titles from this particular genre include Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (2013); Jersey Boys, a wildly successful musical biography about Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons (2005); Movin’ Out which featured the songs of Billy Joel (2002); We Will Rock You, a Queen musical that took place in a hyper-corporate future where musical instruments were forbidden (2002); and Copacabana, a musical featuring the songs of recently out gay crooner Barry Manilow that never made it to Broadway.
