In a sneak peak of Sunday night’s episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Caitlyn Jenner and Khloe Kardashian sit down to have an emotional heart-to-heart we’ve all been waiting for.
While Caitlyn Jenner’s public transition was monumental for trans visibility, it was also hugely important in the way it shared the narrative of how family and friends responded to transitions as well. Individually, they all had different reactions to Caitlyn’s transition, and Khloe Kardashian seemed to struggle the most with accepting her.
Khloe made headlines last year when she opened up about struggling with Caitlyn’s transition. “We felt betrayed because more business people [knew],” Khloe said. “We felt so, like, what the fuck? We’ve been asking you, and why do [business people] know? I never want someone to feel like they have a one-up on our family. We’ve never turned our backs on each, with all the cluster fucks of shit in our lives, so why would we now?”
Caitlyn is often absent from family get-togethers and gatherings on the show. On a recent episode when friends and family surprised Kim for her birthday, Caitlyn wasn’t there; an occasion she would have been invited to pre-transition.
On Sunday’s upcoming episode, Caitlyn returns to the series to confront Khloe about the distance in their relationship and what she can do to change that. “We haven’t talked in a while and I am so happy to be here,” begins Caitlyn. “I just really feel like over the last year and a half we certainly have grown apart.”
“Day after day after month after month, nobody calls. Nobody checks in just, ‘Hey! How are you doing?’ You can’t help but sit there and think, ‘OK, is it because I transitioned? They don’t like me anymore?’ And I want to know what I did wrong? What I didn’t do wrong? What I did right? And move forward.”
“I don’t necessarily want to say you did anything wrong ’cause I don’t know if just because you didn’t do something the way maybe I would have preferred that makes it wrong,” Khloe responds. “This family, we deal with things very quickly. We don’t have time to really process a lot of things because we’re always on to the next and for me, at the time, I just wasn’t at a place in my life where I really could invest in new relationships or even something that’s this heavy.”
“It was very hard for me to experience a lot of new things so quickly and still feeling like I have to protect my mom and certain things that were happening where I felt like they might not have been the most positive,” she explains. “But then I was also like, this isn’t even my fight to fight anymore. I have my own shit
“For me, you’re all I remember, Bruce was,” Khloe says. “So not having you in my life, it’s a huge blow because I’m like, OK, my second dad, this guy that I’ve grown up with, that raised me, was taken away from me, but no one really let me have that.” to deal with, so why don’t you guys figure that stuff out. But I don’t think Caitlyn is a bad person at all.”
