If you’re old enough to remember, back in May of 2003, Dan Savage used his Savage Love column to create a new slang term: Santorum, the frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that’s sometimes the byproduct of anal sex. The neologism took off — to the point where it’s possible someone might not know about its namesake, then-Senator Rick Santorum.
Savage is about to do it again with Donald Trump’s favorite hashtag, #MAGA. And if his results for “santorum” are any indication, it’s a big deal.
First, a bit of background on “santorum.” Sen. Santorum is widely known for making a number of utterly idiotic statements on homosexuality. Here’s one of his “greatest hits”:
“In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That’s not to pick on homosexuality. It’s not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.”
In response to the senator’s parade of nonsense, a Savage Love reader requested that, since Savage had already coined “pegging” — where a woman uses a strap-on to penetrate a man — he could perhaps do the same for “santorum.”
It’s worth noting here that “pegging” was a success — Broad City even did an episode about it.
Savage whittled down the finalists from 3,000 suggestions . Readers got to vote and the “frothy mixture” definition of “santorum” won. Savage set up a website, SpreadingSantorum.com — and bought santorum.com as a redirect.
And santorum did spread. (Sorry for that image.) By 2006, Savage’s site was the number one hit for “santorum.” When the Senator continued his gay bashing, Savage threatened to redefine “Rick” as well.
In fact, a google search for “santorum” today still brings up the “frothy mix” first:
So if Dan Savage threatens to re-define something you care about — it’s a serious threat. When someone asked about “MAGA,” Savage put forth:
"My ass got ate." https://t.co/NoKWadSqqK

Though, Savage was quick to clarify that he didn’t come up with the term:

But then again, he didn’t come up with “santorum” either — he just propagated it. And hopefully we can do it again! So, whenever Trump or one of his followers tweets out #MAGA, just know they’re proudly declaring they just had analingus!
