When asked if Disney had any plans ever to feature an LGBTQ princess in an upcoming film, Ron Clements, one of the directors for Disney’s latest animated film Moana, told The Huffington Post, “It seems like the possibilities are pretty open at this point.”
“It would be driven by a director or a directorial team that really wanted to push that and if [Disney Animation’s Chief Creative Officer] John Lasseter liked the idea,” Moana co-director John Musker said. “But I would say we haven’t ever really [had] restrictions placed on what we’ve done.”
Musker and Clements could be that directorial team. Together they have co-directed seven of Disney’s animated features including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules and The Princess and the Frog (the first Disney animated film to feature a black princess, though it fell into the Disney trope of constantly transforming their characters of color into animals).
Last year, there was rumor of a Disney film featuring two gay princes, but it wasn’t true. But if you want to see a Disney prince get his gay on, you can always watch The Little Mermaid‘s Prince Eric kiss Dmitri from Fox Animation Studios’ Anastasia.
