Gay blog: Cole used homophobic slurs

‘Faggot’ and the WWE

We’re not much into wrestling here at UB – well, at least not the kind of wrestling that involves middle-aged men in tights taunting each other! Nonetheless, it caught our eye when WWE announcer called fellow announcer Josh Matthews a faggot on Twitter.

Gay blog: Cole used homophobic slurs
What, me worry?

What is with these people who keep tweeting unintelligent things? Have they no idea that there’s no taking it back once it’s out into the ether? Pixels are permanent, and yet these buffoons keep tweeting homophobic slurs as if it was going out of style. At least this gives us an opportunity to attack homophobia at the source, and demonstrate that these sorts of off-hand comments are truly damaging to the gay community.

Cole has since apologized – whooptee doo – but the damage has been done. The WWE’s primarily adolescent audience should not be having their role models practicing homophobia in a public place. Wrestler John Cena’s continued suggestions that the Rock and the Miz are gay have also made a splash, leading many to wonder WTF at the WWE.

GLAAD recently stepped in, and is reported to be working with the WWE on an anti-bullying campaign directed to the teenaged fans of the WWE. A statement from the WWE read:

A WWE statement at the time read: “World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) will be working with GLAAD to create and promote an anti-bullying initiative aimed at their core audience, and has invited us to conduct trainings for their staff of writers and editors. GLAAD contacted WWE executives and explained the problem after receiving our first reports. They then spoke to John Cena and the show’s writers. We have been assured that not only will such incidents not happen again, WWE intends to reach out to their adolescent audience, with messages aimed making it clear that bullying someone with homophobic taunts or for their perceived sexual orientation is wrong.

The offensive tweet was deleted, and Cole then tweeted: “I apologize to any and all who were offended by my tweet toward young Josh Mathews. It was obviously not meant the way it was taken.” Yet another tweet followed: “I was not ordered to apologize I said I am sorry because I am. Now can I get back to being a character again please?” This message was also later removed.

After the Twitter incident, promoter Vince McMahon’s company says that they have spoken with Michael and that he “will be included in the training session being done by GLAAD.” Well, that’s all well and nice, but if he truly is the kind of guy to call someone a faggot over Twitter, then we are not too sure any amount of GLAAD training is going to do the trick. Cole claims that he was just being in character, as he always is online. He might be a character, but he also has a responsibility not to be a homophobic idiot. Unless, of course, that is his character. Then at least we know the truth.

  • I’m so sick of the non-apology apologies that celebrities, and politicians alike are using (and worse getting away with)! A politician sends out explicit email consisting of, but not limited to, beastiality, bondage, etc. A celebrity has a hissy fit and tries to throw a chair out of window (that could have done some serious harm to the people below), BOTH politicians and celebrities alike spew homophobic vitriol and all we get is, “I’m sorry if any one was offended” instead of “I’m sorry for what I said/did, it’s not right in any situation, and it shouldn’t have happen/been said”. Like they’re the ones who are most hurt by the situation! These creeps need to think before they speak! And if they do say stupid things, at least be sincerer in the apologies given! */rant*

Michael Cole’s ‘in-character’ character is a moron, plan and simple. The entire WWE Universe hates him at the moment. Pat Patterson was an openly gay wrestler who remains employed at WWE in the behind-the-scenes capacity (he is an older gentleman now)… Vince McMahon (owner & operator) is a huge philanthropist and I would assume that him agreeing to undertake GLAAD training would be a sincere effort. p.s. I am fairly certain that McMahon forced Cole to appologize… lol.
