Galentine's Day

Let’s Celebrate ‘Galentine’s Day’ With Our 10 Favorite Gay Guy-Straight Girl Friendships

Today is Galentine’s Day! The inaugural Galentine’s Day took place in 2010 in a fictional Pawnee, Indiana, but the holiday has taken on a life of its own outside of TV’s Parks and Recreation. The Leslie Knope-created Valentine’s Day Eve celebration gives women a chance to celebrate each other before all the eyeroll-worthy heart-shaped candy and proposals begin to flow.

In honor of the eighth annual Galentine’s Day, we’ve picked 10 of our favorite relationships between gay men and their straight female best friends. Whether you call these women homo honeys or fruit flies, one thing is for sure — these women give us gay men the love and support we’re seeking.

Celebrate Galentine’s Day with these 10 gay guy-straight girl friendships:

1. Grace and Will (Will & Grace)

galentine's day 11

Obviously the duo of Grace Adler and Will Truman is the poster child of the GBF relationship in pop culture. Each week this complicated and complex friendship between these two brings some of the most intense moments to our TVs each week. The hit series returned last year for a reboot, and audiences still can’t help but love these two friends who are there for each other through thick and thin.

2. Karen and Jack (Will & Grace)

galentine's day 10

Jack and Karen depend on each other just as much as Will and Grace … but for different things. (While Will needs Grace as an emotional safety net, Jack needs Karen for her credit card.) This pair is where most of the hilarity ensues every week on Will & Grace, and while they do bring the laughs, they also end up pulling at our heart strings every once and a while, too.

3. Carrie and Stanford (Sex and the City)

galentine's day 9

Some say Stanford wasn’t fully formed and only existed as a secondary character to Sarah Jessica’s Parker’s needy Carrie Bradshaw. But when he was there to dish advice and offer catty quips, we loved every minute of it. Also, this on-screen friendship was so strong that it went into real life when Willie Garson spoke up to defend SJP at the beginning of her very public feud with Kim Cattrall.

4. Hannah and Elijah (Girls)

galentine's day 8

Maybe the messiest of the relationships in this bunch because of the characters’ rather chaotic lives, Hannah dated Elijah in college and found out he was gay during the first season of HBO’s Girls. After his coming out, their relationship entered gay best friend territory with a ride-or-die ethos. Elijah becomes the moral center of the series, unafraid to tell Hannah precisely how and why she’s the way she is: a mess.

5. Doris and Dom (Looking)

galentine's day 6

While some audience members had problems with the short-lived HBO drama Looking, almost everyone could agree the brightest part of the series was the intense relationship between Dom and Doris, anchored by Lauren Weedman’s phenomenal acting.

6. Julianne and George (My Best Friend’s Wedding)

galentine's day

As the suave, smooth-talking gay BFF of our heroine Julianne (played by Julia Roberts), Rupert Everett stole every scene he was in. The role of George was originally much smaller, but Everett tested so well with audiences that producers kept giving him (and the pair’s adorable relationship) more screen time.

7. Kimmy and Titus (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)

galentines day

This pair breaks the mold of the GBF archetype best, as Flavorwire’s Moze Halperin points out: “It makes sense that [series creator Tina] Fey would be the person (along with her Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-creator, Robert Carlock) to finally write a ‘gay best friend’ who echoes past manifestations of the stock character — in a now somewhat radical fashion — while also being much more than a ‘gay best friend,'” he writes. “Titus Andromedon, played by Tituss Burgess, is gay-best-friending in exactly the right moment, in exactly the right way.”

8. Damian and Janis (Mean Girls)

galentine's day 2

Damian and Janis — played by one of our favorite out actors, Daniel Franzese, and the indomitable Lizzy Caplan — played the stereotypical freak and geek of high school that we all related to. Their iconic friendship is about to reach new audiences and an even younger generation as Mean Girls prepares to play The Great Pink White Way this spring.

9. Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski

galentine's day

We had to include this real-life pair of best friends in our roundup, especially since everyone can’t stop talking about their fabulous commentary and couture at the Winter Olympics in South Korea. After not meeting for years, the pair instantly connected when they realized they had the same exact luggage. Lipinski explained to GQ recently that once they bonded over Céline, the rest was herstory.

“It was just one of those instant connections,” she explained. “And we said: Why aren’t we doing this together? So we asked if we could. I’m sure at first people were like, ‘Oh boy.’ So they gave us a trial run. And within that next year we went to Sochi, and on air and off air we just started to bond. It’s like a long-lost soul mate that I met late in life. I can’t imagine my life without him.”

10. Adam Rippon and Mirai Nagasu

galentine's day 3

And while we’re on the topic of the Winter Olympics, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out another straight girl-gay boy friendship that has made headlines recently, especially after Adam Rippon relayed an adorable story of the pair eating fast food while dreaming of being in the Olympics one day.

“We climbed up to the roof of her house and we were eating In-N-Out because we were so upset that we weren’t at the Olympic Games,” Rippon recalled to NBC. “We’re roommates here, staying at the Olympic Village. We gave each other a hug and I said, ‘You know, Mirai, we’re here! We did it!’”

“I love my girl and so proud of her tonight,” Rippon said of Nagasu’s performance. “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, then to see my friend go out there and skate like that is even better.”

No, we’re not crying. You’re crying.

Now in honor of Galentine’s Day, call up your homo honey or gay best friend and tell them you love them.

I want Johnny Weir and Adam Rippon to crash an event attended by Mike Pence, just to freak Krishchun boy out.
