‘BoJack Horseman’ Creator Eviscerates Jared Leto for Gross Transphobia in Two-Minute Takedown

Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator and showrunner of the Netflix cartoon series BoJack Horseman, sat down with Marc Fennell at the inaugural Video Junkee festival. The conversation landed on actor Jared Leto, and Bob-Waksberg went in.

Bob-Waksberg talked about his show, an adult animated sitcom that stars Will Arnett as the title character with Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins and Aaron Paul.

The series takes place mostly in Hollywood in an alternate world where humans and anthropomorphic animals live side by side. BoJack Horseman, the washed-up star of the ’90s sitcom Horsin’ Around, plans his big return to celebrity relevance with a tell-all autobiography.

BoJack Horseman satirizes Hollywood, celebrity culture, drug abuse, anxiety and the film industry. The series makes many pop culture references and parodies, some that are rather scathing at the real-life personality’s expense.

But nothing was more scathing than what happened next during the candid interview.

During an audience Q&A, a fan asked Bob-Wakserg if there were any celebrities he really loves to roast. The answer is yes: Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto.

“We have a line in the new season about Jared Leto,” he responded. “Because like, fuck that guy… I don’t like him. I don’t like him! I feel like he is still coasting off My So-Called Life. Like the goodwill from that.”

Fennell responded: “And Requiem for a Dream.”

To which Bob-Waskberg cordially responds. “He was great in that.”

This is where all cordial-ness ends.

“My line on Jared Leto, which is not in the show, just what I say about him in conversations is, ‘The coolest thing Jared Leto ever did was get punched in the face by Edward Norton in Fight Club.”

“He really… he bugs the shit out of me. His whole thing with the ‘we’re bad guys, we’re good guys’ Joker whatever blurgh bullshit.. He would send, like, used condoms and dead pigs to the other actors as like a weird method thing. It’s like, how does that help anything? What are you doing?

“You respect the character of the Joker so much. You have to inhabit him. And he’s literally the worst Joker we’ve seen. There have been so many and you’re the worst. You think that helped?

“BY THE WAY, PS, ALSO, when he was in the Dallas Buyers’ Club playing a trans character who died of AIDS — not a real person, but still — he would do interviews and say, ‘What a glorious creature’. It’s not a fucking creature! It’s a person, you asshole. He’d make jokes like ‘I had to shave my legs, tee hee’. It’s not cute, you idiot.

“So, fuck him.

“You’re gonna watch the new season now, waiting for the Jared Leto line — and it’s in the very end, it’s like the last episode and it’s barely anything — and you’re gonna be like, ‘That’s all he said?’

“So like Eric McCormack, I got nothing about him, but when you hear the Jared Leto line, know that I meant it.”

  • Raphael Bob-Waksberg sounds like an insufferable prick. He’s also confusing Margot Robbie’s lines with Leto’s, and misquoting him.

Meh, this feels more like a guy just speaking his mind and being kind of a dick about it. I don’t particularly have as strong of feelings about Jared Leto, either good or bad, as he does though so maybe that’s what I’m missing. idk.

This guy just seems like he’s jealous honestly. I didn’t like Jared’s joker. It’s hard to follow what Heath Ledger gave us. I truly don’t think he meant any disrespect by saying “what a beautiful creature” about his trans character either. He’s in a band that’s literally all about accepting different walks of life and diversity…I just don’t think he would ever mean it as negative. Also, I think this guy is the only one even still talking about My So-Called Life. Jared wasn’t even in a ton of the episodes lol. No one has talked about that show in years and when I mention it no one even knows what I’m talking about. But if I mention his other projects or his band they know what I’m talking about. So I highly doubt he’s still “coasting” off it lol. I wouldn’t go as far as saying she’s “totally eviscerated” Jared Leto. More like he went on a rant of how much he hates Jared Leto while not giving us any really good reasons why he feels this way.

I love how we can apparently very accurately judge Leto’s Joker from seeing him for like 5 minutes in a film with botched editing. You guys, he’s the WORST. Yeah it’s true the movie was edited in such a way where nothing made sense, most of what he shot wasn’t shown and you blinked and he was gone but lets totally constantly compare him to the others who were given a chance.

  • Todd Halliwell

I thought he was the best Joker ever..

What kind of nonsense? Coasting off of My So Called Life? Has the rest of his career meant nothing? 30+ movies and several world tours with his band? A stack of impressive tech investments? Creating his own start-up? Directing a handful of documentaries? In the past twelve months alone, he’s filmed two movies and is currently on tour. What on earth does somebody have to do to avoid being accused of coasting off a minor achievement from 1994?

I love Bojack Horseman but this was garbage to read.

I never saw anything like that in terms of editing. He didn’t have scenes, but fast snapchats with broken sequences, full of filters and scattered randomly in the film. The editors even changed the scene that I loved the most from the trailers when he did that wide, sadic Joker smile while saying ” I ‘m gonna hurt you really really bad.

He couldn’t steal Will Smith limelight, could he?

He has many reasons to hate Jared! Ever heard of envy? This ugly, bitter and untalented guy has many reasons to hate his opposite.

  • Caitlin

My thoughts exactly! He was barely even in My So Called Life! And I know because I was a teenage girl that thought he was good looking and was disappointed that he wasn’t in it more lmao. And shit, he’s in the new Blade Runner movie coming out! How more relevant can you get? Dude needs to simmer down.
