Jennifer Lewis

Let’s Be Thankful for This Video of Jenifer Lewis Calling Trump a Mentally Ill Sociopath

It may feel hard to be thankful this Thanksgiving considering that destructive man-child Donald Trump is President of the United States (shudder). However, we can all feel thankful that people like actress Jenifer Lewis are speaking out against the president’s sociopathic behavior and explaining what we can do to survive the next three years of his presidency.

If you don’t know who Jenifer Lewis is, she’s an actress, comedian and activist who appeared in the 1988 Bette Midler friendship drama Beaches; the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg nun-sensical comedy Sister Act; and Drag Race alum Shangela’s 2012 music video “Werqin Girl (Professional).” She currently plays a recurring grandmother character in the ABC sitcom Black-ish.

Since she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1990, Lewis has been an outspoken advocate for mental health and self-love, which partly informs the strong words she had against Trump yet in support of American resilience.

In an interview with Brut, a digital platform for short news videos, Lewis said:

If you don’t have hope because Donald Trump is president, find hope. You don’t get to sit down and wait four years until he’s gone because everything’s so ‘fucked up.’ You fight. Make a difference, get a kid to mentor, do something to resist that. You don’t get to hate him. I don’t hate him. I feel sorry for him because like I said, I know what mental illness is. He won’t get help because on top of of his mental illness he’s a sociopath. They don’t have feelings. They just tock-tock-tock-tock. They don’t give a fuck who’s in the way — just get the fuck out of the way. You saw the way he pushed that other leader out of the way. It’s madness that he represents the world. He’s not just fucking up America, it’s the world. And they’re looking at us like we’re fucking insane. And God bless the people who voted for him. That’s what this is, a democracy. They lived with Obama, we gotta live with Trump.

And she said it while delivering some serious face and dramatic effect. Plus, that sweater she’s wearing — wow.

Lewis is hardly the first person to seriously question Trump’s mental state. Various politicians and psychologists have publicly questioned his “fitness” to serve as president, and publications like The Washington Post and The Atlantic have even gone so far as to get professional psychologists to weigh in.

Interestingly, the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) differ in their stances on whether psychologists should comment on Trump’s mental health. The APsaA says its members can comment as individuals but the ASA says that it’s unethical for professionals to do so unless they have clinically evaluated him first.

Whether he’s mentally ill or not, Trump sucks. We’re thankful that we’re not alone in thinking so, or resisting him to help preserve our communities despite his sociopathic tendencies.

Now, just for fun, let’s see Jenifer Lewis in Shangela’s video for “Werqin Girl (Professional)”:
