Warner Bros Pictures has unveiled a first-look at the second film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and announced its title. The first-look features Jude Law who will be appearing in the series for the first time as a young (and possibly openly gay) Albus Dumbledore.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald is the follow-up to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which launched what will be a five film series of new adventures from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Eddie Redmayne reprises his role as magizoologist Newt Scamander with Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller and Johnny Depp also returning.

In 2007, J.K. Rowling outed Dumbledore as gay during a stop on her book tour at New York’s Carnegie Hall. “My truthful answer to you… I always thought of Dumbledore as gay,” she told the audience who leapt to their feet in standing ovation.

Rowling then continued to explain the backstory:

Dumbledore fell in love with (the dark wizard) Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him. Yeah, that’s how I always saw Dumbledore.

But will Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore be openly gay?

Although she wouldn’t confirm it, Rowling hinted that Dumbledore could be openly gay in the Fantastic Beasts series. She previously told Variety, “You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man.”

“We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned… watch this space.”

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald opens one year from today on November 16, 2018.
