Marilyn Manson Reaped Profits From the Justin Bieber Tee Using His Image

Last year, Justin Bieber and the designer Fear of God released a new shirt. It sold at Barneys for $195, though you would be forgiven for not realizing it was a Bieber shirt at first glance. This Justin Bieber Marilyn Manson tee repurposed an existing shirt design from the ’90s shock-rocker.

The sleeves were cut off the shirt, which featured a picture of Manson on the front with his name, and “Bigger Than Satan” on the back. The Bieber version screenprinted “BIEBER” on the back beneath “Bigger Than Satan.”

The original non-Bieber’d version of the shirt is still available. Amazon is currently selling it from $8-$16.

Fear of God claimed Manson gave permission to use the original shirt. But as it turns out, that’s not entirely true. In a new interview with Consequence of Sound, Manson clarifies the situation.

Manson says he first heard of the shirt when he met Bieber, who was already wearing the modified shirt and told Manson, “I made you relevant again.”

Unsurprisingly, Manson wasn’t impressed. Manson lied to him, telling Bieber he’d be at soundcheck the next day at Staples Center to perform his hit “Beautiful People.” Of course, Manson never intended to show up, but he claims Bieber “believed that I’d show up, because he was that stupid.”

Manson says Bieber also took the credit for the idea of repurposing the shirt. But the rocker eventually got all the proceeds from the shirt. Manson told Consequence of Sound, “They didn’t even fight, they were just like, ‘Yeah, we already know, we did wrong, so here’s the money.’ He was a real piece of shit in the way he had the arrogance to say that.”

Marilyn Manson’s newest album, Heaven Upside Down, comes out Oct. 6. Justin Bieber has not set a release date for his upcoming album. Rumors it will be titled Heaven Upside Down Bieber are unfounded.
