The story has been updated below.
Kenneth Adkins, an anti-gay pastor who once said that the Orlando shooting victims deserved it, was found guilty of molestation.
A Brunswick, Georgia jury found Adkins guilty on all eight charges for molesting a teen girl and boy at his church seven years ago, Savannah Now reports. The jury took an hour to decide.
Adkins has a prior record, and Georgia has strict mandatory minimum sentencing laws, so the pastor could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Savannah Now writes:
Adkins was convicted of grooming two teens — youths he was supposed to be mentoring — to have sexual intercourse first in front of him so he could judge if they were doing it properly to eventually joining in on the acts himself. Last week the jury saw two photographs of Adkins’ penis that he sent his male accuser in 2014. And they saw several electronic messages sent between Adkins and the female.
“She’s in his clutches,” said Assistant District Attorney Katie Gropper. “What he has done to that girl is not only criminal, it is deplorable.”
Adkins made headlines after the Orlando shooting last June. Instead of showing compassion to the victim, Adkins went on a now-infamous, intensely homophobic Twitter rant, saying:
Dear Gays: go sit down somewhere. I know y’all want some special attention; y’all are Sinners who need Jesus. This was an attack on America.
[I’ve] been through so much with these Jacksonville homosexuals that I don’t see none of them as victims. I see them as getting what they deserve!!
Adkins also wore a feminine blonde wig to protest Jacksonville’s pro-LGBTQ Human Rights Ordinance a few years ago.
Adkins vehemently denied the allegations of child molestation, then asked his followers for money in a Facebook post last February. Looks like it didn’t work.
UPDATE, April 26: The 57-year-old pastor has been sentenced to a minimum of 35 years in prison for aggravated child molestation and faces 20 additional years for additional charges.
