These 35 Pics Show How Los Angeles Throws a Leather Competition

On Sunday, Nov. 19, the leather lovers of Los Angeles gathered at Precinct — the largest gay bar in Downtown L.A. — for the 2018 Mr. Precinct Leather competition. Hosted by Sister Bearonce Knows and featuring performances by Pinche Queen and Meatball, the day started out with the bar’s popular Bear Bust event, culminating in the crowning of the bar’s new leather representative.

The annual contest, which began at 6 p.m. following a contestant meet-and-greet, was overseen by a judges panel that included Art Berkowitz, Mr. LA Bear 2018; Ali Mushtaq, Mr. Long Beach Leather 2016; FiFi LaFille, Mr. Precinct Leather 2017; Bam Bam, Mr. LA Leather Bear 2017; and Jem Jehova, Mr. San Francisco Leather 2015.

At the end of the leather competition, Spike was awarded the title of Mr. Precinct Leather, and Christian Sanchez was the night’s runner-up.

Unlike the leather competitions you might find in other American cities and around the world, Los Angeles doesn’t mind mixing gender play with what’s typically a ‘butch queen’ event. Last year’s Mr. Precinct Leather, Fifi LaFille, won the title while decked out in full drag. Spike, this year’s winner, was awarded his new title while sporting a colored mohawk and red lipstick. Its leather competitions seem to be but one more way there’s really no place like the City of Angels.

Leather will again descend upon the city for Los Angeles Leather Pride 2018, taking place March 18-25 next year. The 2018 Mr. Los Angeles Leather competition will feature a slew of contestants — including the city’s newest titleholder, Spike — competing for L.A.’s biggest leather title.
