One of the beloved recurring features on The Late Late Show with James Corden is Crosswalk the Musical. (You thought we were gonna say “Carpool Karaoke“, didn’t you?) Corden and his cast have done Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins and Grease, among others.
But Corden’s topped himself with his latest segment. He brought in a ringer — Lin-Manuel Miranda, the writer and lead performer of Hamilton — and they picked a doozy to do: Hair.
If you’ve never seen Hair, it’s the counterculture musical about America’s hippie movement. The musical tells the story of a group of hippies, known as “the tribe,” as they freak out the squares and avoid the Vietnam War. Sort of like a ’60s version of Rent only with Vietnam instead of AIDS.
Hair is widely remembered for two things. First, the outstanding songbook. (There’s a reason there were so many covers of songs from Hair.) But also (more importantly?) the famous finale, in which the cast strips fully naked.
The above “Crosswalk the Musical” version proves itself to be the best incarnation of Hair by focusing on those two things. Miranda, Corden and the cast nail “Aquarius,” “Hair” and “The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In).”
And just like in the play, it’s during “The Flesh Failures” when Miranda and Corden doff their hippie robes. They say that neither CBS nor California were going to allow them to be on the city streets fully nude. And though CBS does censor out the guys’ naughty bits, when Miranda jumps up on a car hood, we think we spied a bit of dangle. We can’t say for sure, of course, but we think they actually were nude, not just wearing flesh-colored briefs.
Who knows? Maybe we’ll get our answer. The video shows a number of people filming the scene on their phones. Either way, we’re happy just believing in our heart of hearts that we got to see Lin-Manuel Miranda naked.
