Oscars 2017: Mahershala Ali Wins Best Supporting Actor for ‘Moonlight’

This is exciting! Mahershala Ali just won an Oscar for his role in Moonlight. This is his first nomination and win.

Moonlight is a coming-of-age film chronicling the life of a black man struggling with his sexuality from childhood to adulthood.

We loved Ali in the film, and are so happy he is walking away a winner. This is isn’t his first award for the role this award’s season. Those prizes he claimed include a SAG Award and National Society of Film Critics Award.

From Mahershala Ali’s speech for the Oscar:

I wanna thank my teachers and professors, I had so many wonderful teachers, and one thing they consistently told me was that it’s not about you, it’s about these characters. You’re a servant, you’re in service to these stories and these characters.

I’m so blessed to have had an opportunity. It was such a wonderful experience, thank you [director] Barry Jenkins, thank you Tarell Alvin McCraney [writer of the play Moonlight was based on]. I also want to thank my wife, we just had our daughter four days ago, so I just want to thank her for being such a soldier through this process and really carrying me through it all. Thank you, peace and blessings.

Other nominees in the Best Supporting Actor category were:

Jeff Bridges , “Hell or High Water”

Lucas Hedges , “Manchester by the Sea”

Dev Patel , “Lion”

Michael Shannon , “Nocturnal Animals”
