Mazda Recalls 52,000 Spider-Infested Cars

All up in your business!

Grrrrrross! Automobile manufacturer Mazda has announced the recall of 52,000 of its vehicles for an extremely unusual problem. The Yellow Sac Spider, apparently popular throughout the U.S., enjoys the smell of gasoline so much that it has moved into the accessible emissions system of many of Mazda’s cars.

I know this doesn’t necessarily fly under the banner of gay news, but thousands of spiders infesting cars is certainly a queer enough development for inclusion on this gay blog.

Reuters reports:

The build-up of webs in the emission systems could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks.

The culprit is the Yellow Sac spider, which makes the Mazda6 model of Mazda cars its home because it is lured inside by the smell of the fuel. The Mazda6 is known as the Atenza in Japan.

“While it’s very rare, this spider’s distinguishing characteristic is that it likes the smell of gasoline, caused by the hydrogen oxide,” said automotive journalist Mitsuhiro Kunisawa.

“Once it smells the gasoline from outside, it will go inside. In the United States, it’s a relatively common type of spider.”

The affected model, the Mazda6, has two pipes coming out from its gas tank, which is extremely rare and means that the smell of gasoline is strong enough to draw the spider in but not strong enough to kill it, Kunisawa said.

We’re going to go ahead and officially file this in our worst nightmares folder – along with being stuck on an escalator behind someone who stands still as if it were a slow-moving ride. Deep breaths…

Any Mazda drivers out there who have found any critters building condos in their cars?

My brother is an ER nurse and they actually have a name for people who get in car accidents while shooing bugs – Spider Fighters! 😉

@_@ I’m absolutely terrified of spiders. I’ve almost had major car wrecks due to having one in my car from time to time. I just bought a 08′ mazda6 I’m going to have to look into this further.

So Glad we don’t own one of those, I’m totally afraid of spiders, and if this was in my car, and just happened to crawl out while I was driving… Yeah Incoming Accident

  • Anyone else see a trend? (along with practices? someone needs to bring the health inspectors to vehicle manufacturer’s places now? )
