North Carolina GOP Cocks Up its Repeal of Transphobic Bathroom Bill

You had one job, North Carolina Republicans!! Your GOP-controlled legislature was supposed to get together this week to repeal HB2, your state’s transphobic bathroom bill? Yeah, well you really cocked it up by trying to pass a repeal provision forbidding cities from passing their own public accommodations ordinances (that is, protections that would allow transgender people from safely using public restrooms, locker rooms and other facilities without harassment).

This provision only would have lasted six months — presumably long enough to let y’all extend it as often as you liked, indefinitely until the end of time — and in the meanwhile, it would’ve stopped cities like Charlotte from trying to make North Carolina a more welcoming and tolerant place. But instead, you tried sneaking in this provision, the state’s Democratic legislators didn’t support it, the repeal didn’t have enough votes to pass and now you’re stuck with your shitty, hateful law indefinitely.

Naturally, you’re blaming everyone but yourselves, but if you’d simply stuck to your word and just repealed the law without strings attached, you might be on your way to recouping the hundreds of millions you’ve lost since first passing it. But instead, your state will continue losing out and looking like a bunch of transphobic hicks — oh and by the way, the NAACP is now calling for a nationwide boycott of your state. Shouldn’t surprise anyone though considering just how underhanded and sneaky you and your cohorts have been of late. Sigh.

At least this way you get to keep looking like protectors of social values while your Democrats opponents look like defenders of equality; the only ones who lose are your state’s trans citizens and the businesses suffering from the continued HB2-boycotts… y’know, basically everyone else.
