These ‘Questions for Heterosexuals’ Will Really Make You Think

When was the last time you faced a question from a heterosexual person about being LGBT? Often these questions — about what “caused you” to be gay or “why can’t you just keep quiet about it” — come off as insensitive or flat-out ignorant. Well, one college professor is turning the tables in her course on Human Sexuality, sharing with her class some “Questions for Heterosexuals” that are designed to mimic topics that members of the queer community get asked.

The questions have been popping up all over the web after a student shared them via Twitter.

Check out these questions:

What do you think caused your heterosexuality?

When did you decide you were a heterosexual?

Is it possible your heterosexuality is just a phase you may grow out of?

Why do you insist on flaunting your heterosexuality? Why can’t you just be what you are and keep quiet about it?

Why do you heterosexuals feel compelled to seduce others into your lifestyle?

Have you considered therapy to change your heterosexual tendencies?

The student, Elise, told Buzzfeed, “The slide is supposed to be funny, but [the professor] made us really think about why it was so funny. A lot of people in the class had probably never been asked these questions before, so I think she was trying to show them what it would be like, but in a humorous way.”

Elise also tells Buzzfeed that some (presumably straight) people found the questions offensive! (How hilarious is that?!)

“I think that a lot of straight people feel victimized by these questions. I don’t think that’s the purpose of the questions at all. But I do think it’s silly that someone would be offended by these questions to straight people but not appalled at the way the LGBTQ community is treated.”

Preach, Elise!
