Ryan Murphy’s Excellent Plan To Help Female, People of Color And LGBT Directors

“Rather than pay lip service to what we all agree is an important goal for this industry — creating equal opportunity for women and minorities behind the camera — [Ryan Murphy is] actually committing the resources of his company and setting clear targets to help make a real difference.”

FOX Television chief Dana Walden praising TV writer/director Ryan Murphy for his recent decision to ensure that half of his shows’ directors are either women, people of color or LGBT people. Murphy currently oversees the show Scream Queens, American Crime Story and American Horror Story, but he has also pledged to share the names of his directorial candidates with other showrunners who might share his goal of greater representation in TV. Currently, female directors make up a quarter or less of all TV directors with women of color directing less than six percent of any network’s shows.
