Watch This Non-Muslim Politician Handle a Protestor Yelling About Anti-Gay Islamic Law (Video)

During a meet and greet event in Ontario with Jagmeet Singh, a turban-wearing politician who wants to become the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, a woman calling herself Jennifer walked directly up to Singh and started yelling at him, saying things like, “We know you’re about Sharia Law. We know you’re about the Muslim Brotherhood,” and “When is your Sharia going to end? At what point, when we’re throwing gays off rooftops?”

Surprisingly, Singh calmly reacted, keeping his voice low and not trying to silence or invalidate the protestor’s ranting. When an assistant tried to guide her out of Singh’s face, she pointed her finger and said, “Don’t anybody touch me or I will call the police immediately!”

Sharia is a form of Muslim law but Singh isn’t Muslim

The thing is, Sharia is a type of Islamic law followed by Muslims, and Singh isn’t Muslim — he’s Sikh, an entirely different religion that doesn’t even follow Sharia law.

When Singh finally got a word in edgewise, he assertively responded on a microphone by saying, “We don’t want hatred to ruin a positive event. So let’s show people how we would treat someone with love.”

He then repeatedly told the protestor, “We welcome you. We welcome you. We welcome you. We love you. We support you and we love you. We all here, everyone in this room loves you, we all support you. We believe in your rights, but this isn’t the best way to do it, but it’s okay, we’re going to talk some more.”

Here’s video of “Jennifer” yelling at Singh about Sharia law

Why are conservatives so afraid of Sharia Law?

Islamophobic conservatives often invoke Sharia (a system of Islamic laws) to incite nationalist fears of an anti-democratic takeover of Western culture by Muslims. While some extreme versions of Sharia law (like that practiced by the militant terrorist organization ISIS/Daesh) deem homosexuality as a crime punishable by death, no national Muslim organization has ever called for Sharia to supercede American courts. Rather, many American conservatives use the specter of Sharia to justify numerous laws targeting Muslim and Middle Eastern-Americans.

Sikhs don’t believe in Sharia law anyway, so “Jennifer” is barking up the wrong tree. However, she represents a growing far-right contingent in Canada who believe that Muslims want to destroy Canadian culture.

The frustrated protestor left after about five minutes. After she left, Singh said,”You know growing up as a brown-skinned, turbaned, bearded man, I faced things like this before. It’s not a problem, we can deal with it. It’s not a problem, there are going to be other obstacles that we face and we’re going to face them with love and courage.”
