Elizabeth Berkley in Showgrisl (1995)

VIDEO: “Showgirls” and “Black Swan” Are Actually The Same Movie

It’s been five years since the release of the psychological thriller Black Swan. It’s arty, edgy, and happens to have almost the exact same plot as the 1995 cult classic Showgirls — no, really. And we have the mash-up trailer to prove it.

It’s been twenty years since the curtain rose on Showgirls, director Paul Verhoeven’s badly maligned follow-up to trashy sexual thriller Basic Instinct. Starring Saved By The Bell‘s Elizabeth Berkley, the film charted the rise and fall of a drug-addled hooker named Nomi Malone who heads to Las Vegas in a quest to become an exotic dancer. While it’s considered a classic now in certain circles, critics and audiences in 1995 hated the movie, and it effectively killed Berkley’s acting career.

Fifteen years later, acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky made his own movie about dancers, a stylish, over-the-top horror spectacle called Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman as a goody two-shoes ballet dancer who gets cast in a big production of Swan Lake. While it had its detractors, the film was a big hit. Aronofsky and Portman both received Oscar nominations – Natalie actually won Best Actress – and the film made over $300 million worldwide.

But they’re kind of the same movie. They both have aspiring young dancers with quasi-lesbian friends who are bad influences. Both dancers do drugs, shed their “good girl” pretenses and do some desperate, cut-throat things to rise to the top. The. exact. same. film.

No, really. Watch this trailer that mashes up the two movies, with sound from Black Swan and visuals from Showgirls. (NSFW alert: lots of boobs.) It’s uncanny.

The trailer was edited by Jeffrey McHale, a professional editor in Los Angeles whose credits include music videos and work for Al Jazeera. He’s made other trailer mash-ups as well, pairing The Hunger Games with The Sound of Music and Bridesmaids with Steel Magnolias.
