Taiwanese Lesbian Ordered to Pay $16,000 to Ex-Husband She Dumped for a Woman

A Taiwanese lesbian who married a man due to family pressure was ordered by a court to pay her husband Tw$500,000 (about $16,000) after she left him for a woman.

The Hsinchu court said the money was to compensate the man for wedding expenses, “betrothal money” (i.e. gifts given to win over the bride and her family) and emotional suffering, Yahoo! reports.

According to the court judgment, the woman dated the man to make her mother happy. The pair married last January, but the bride dumped her husband just a few days later for a woman she’d been involved with for quite some time.

Taiwan is much more progressive than other Southeast Asian countries when it comes to homosexuality. The nation may legalize same-sex marriage soon. But prejudice and stigma still remain, and the older generations are more conservative, as they are anywhere else.
