Trump Says He’ll Keep Obama’s Protections for LGBTQ Workers

The White House yesterday that Trump would not throw out Obama’s 2014 order protecting workers’ rights for LGBTQ people employed by the federal government.

The announcement comes as a relief after rumors that Trump was planning to pass an executive order attacking LGBTQ rights.

The New York Times writes:

Leaving those protections, of course, does not preclude another executive order that would roll back gay rights in other areas. Mr. Trump could, for example, still enshrine a religious freedom provision in federal policy.

Gay rights advocates seemed unimpressed. Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said Mr. Trump was setting a low bar by claiming credit for not overturning the actions of his predecessor.

Trump might not be willing to throw out workplace protections (yet), but there are plenty of other ways he can hurt the queer community. He could roll back adoption rights for same-sex couples, or introduce a nationwide bathroom bill, or add “religious freedom” exceptions to LGBTQ rights laws.

So don’t relax yet. Vice President Mike Pence is notoriously homophobic, and Trump’s record regarding equality and basic human decency has been poor so far. This announcement could be nothing more than a distraction. Keep fighting.
