TX Democratic Chairman Compares Gays To Termites, Nazis

Dan Ramos has a termite problem.

Bexar County, TX, Democratic Party chairman Dan Ramos refuses to step down from office in the wake of incredibly offensive homophobic and racist remarks he made last week to the San Antonio Current. His defense? He “didn’t realize he was being interviewed.” Rather than apologize for his comments, he said them again.

Think Progress reports:

In an interview with the Current today, Ramos blamed homosexuals in the party for both undermining his authority and for the poor election results in Bexar County in 2010. “They are all connected to the gay Democratic Party, the so-called Stonewall Democrats. Just like termites they managed to get some of their people in key positions,” he said. […]

Ramos said he opposes homosexuality on religious grounds and doesn’t believe gay-friendly Democrats like Stonewall reflect the values of Bexar County voters. “I liken them to the Tea Party — the Tea Party and the fucking Nazi Party — because they’re 90 percent white, blue-eyed, and Anglo, and I don’t give a fuck who knows that. Just like the blacks … they’re American, but you can’t get your way just because you’re black.

Someone certainly isn’t afraid to speak his mind. “I believe I’m dealing with the truth, sometimes the truth hurts. So be it.”

You know you’ve got it bad when your own party is demanding you abdicate your post and crawl into a hole somewhere never to be heard from again. If you possess views like this about your constituents, why would you even wish to represent them in the first place? Jeezums.

Are you upset with Ramos’ comparing gays to nazis and termites?

So glad that this story has made it onto Unicorn Booty. I’m a student at Trinity University in San Antonio and have been outraged the past few days about Dan Ramos’s continuing hate speech. There’s more to the story that has developed since the initial remarks. He said yesterday that being gay is unnatural and is like a “kid who was born with a polio leg, you can’t kill him and you can’t sweep him under the rug,” implying that children born with disabilities should be killed.

A group I’m a part of, Direct Action Network of San Antonio, staged a protest outside a Democratic Party fundraiser last night and had several supporters show up. Many of the people at the fundraiser agreed with the group. Here’s a local story covering the protest: http://www.ksat.com/news/27234281/detail.html

This guy has to stop, but it looks like he won’t come willingly. The Sexual Diversity Alliance at my school and other queer rights advocacy groups at neighboring colleges are launching letter-writing campaigns this coming week to demand that he resign; we’re also writing to Senator Carlos Uresti to get his unequivocal demand for Ramos’s resignation, and we’re writing to the DNC. We’re not going to rest until this hateful man is out of a position of power.

Some “values” that Americans hold and have held in the past are just simply wrong, anti-equality and therefore anti-American. Racist, sexist, ageist, discriminatory against certain groups (religious, socio-economic, gender, sexual orientation). How can any public official defend them?

  • I’m abso-freaking-lutely upset. The politicians these days often forget that it’s not up to their nutso opinions to govern the masses. It’s up to the people and justice. Screw him and anyone with less than half a mind to terminate this “termite.”

  • His comments shouldn’t have been said in the first place. To top it off, claiming that he didn’t know he was being interviewed? How the hell can you not know? This is a morbid situation, but it has always been known that Texas was not a gay-friendly community.

Well, termites like wood… I like wood.

Wait. Isn’t that Maggie Gallagher in brown-face with a fake beard?

  • It’s bad enough we’ve got to fight the right-wing nutjobs; when we’ve got to be embarrassed by and apologize for our own Democrats, it’s time to remove the reason for the embarrassment and apology. If this offensive cretin won’t at least have the grace to resign, Bexar Democrats should remove him immediately.
