Tyler Clementi & Dharun Ravi

Dharun Ravi, who filmed and broadcast his roommate Tyler Clementi having sex with another man over the internet, has been indicted on 15 separate counts in the aftermath of Clementi’s suicide.

Ravi, and Molly Wei, both 19, withdrew from classes at Rutgers University last fall after their gross invasion of Clementi’s privacy led to him jumping to his death off of the George Washington Bridge.

Asbury Park Press reports:

The 15-count indictment againt Dharun Ravi, 19, includes a host of charges from invasion of privacy to the new charges of bias intimidation.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said in a release that the bias intimidation began in August “the day he learned the name of his roommate, T.C.” The Prosecutor’s Office has not named Clementi directly.

The charge suggests Dharun Ravi targeted Clementi because he was gay.

Dharun Ravi is accused of spying on Tyler Clementi and the other man, identified only as M.B., by positioning his webcam on them and viewing it remotely on Sept. 19. Dharun Ravi attempted to do the same on Sept. 21, according to the charges.

The indictment against Dharun Ravi includes four bias intimidation charges, two of them second-degree charges that can bring up to 10 years in prison each. Other charges include tampering with evidence, attempted invasion of privacy, hindering apprehension and witness tampering.

Charges have yet to be brought against Wei, but are expected to follow shortly.

Clementi’s parents released a statement following the announcement of the charges being brought against their son’s tormentor:

”The indictment spells out cold and calculated acts against our son Tyler by his former college roommate. If these facts are true, as they appear to be, then it is important for our criminal justice system to establish clear accountability under the law. We are eager to have the process move forward for justice in this case and to reinforce the standards of acceptable conduct in our society.”

Clementi is dead, and Ravi and Wei will probably spend the rest of their lives behind bars. Such a waste of life from all angles.

  • life in prison. yeah right. he’ll get a slap on the wrist, and be released to spend most of his twenties on probation.

  • While that would feel like justice, the elements of second degree murder do not exist in this case. Maybe, if stretched, an indictment could be issued for third degree murder (or involuntary manslaughter), but it would be extremely unlikely to result in a conviction. The privacy violations and bias crimes are the most reasonable offenses to charge him with, though a conviction is not a lock.

What about an for indictment second degree murder???

The Rutgers’ daily newspaper explained that he tried to convince people not to testify against him and he attempted to alter his twitter (or some other social website) posts to look less incriminating. Even after Tyler’s death, he is not willing to accept repercussions for his actions! Horrible.

I was beginning to think that Ravi was just going to walk away, what about his partner in crime, Molly?

I am SO glad they’re charging this guy! When I first heard of this story, my heart just broke. I can’t imagine how humiliated he must have felt to have to resort to such an extreme to end the embarrassment. That poor guy. My thoughts are with his family. I hope they find justice for their bright, wonderful son.
