This Queer Artist Reimagines Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik as the Gender Fluid Couple They Never Were

Earlier this summer, Vogue made a huge misstep when it labeled Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid as a gender fluid couple. We were one of the first outlets to scream: “HELL NO WAY!! ARE YOU PEOPLE CRAZY?!?!”

A few days later after releasing the cover, editors at Vogue issued an apology.  “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture,” they wrote. “We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit — we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”

Well, thankfully for us, queer artist Zain Curtis (aka Teen Witch Fan Club) is depicting the duo as a “radical gender fluid couple in fictional, intimate portraits.”

“I wanted to do a parody of the Vogue photoshoot as if it was more intimate and extreme,” the Chicago-based artist told OUT. “I enjoyed the controversy over the article because it broadcasted a new term to a lot of their mainstream audience. Fluidity should not be seen as a trend, but there to explore gender, sexuality and to have fun with the multitudes of both. This wasn’t saying this is the correct way to present gender fluidity, just my spin on it.”

The cover of Curtis’ project recreates Vogue’s original with the title “Fluid” and the headline “G & Z Get Radical.” Inside, Hadid is illustrated pegging Malik naked on a bed. In another image, he’s shown wearing only a corset, flirty heels and thigh-high stockings reminding us of a boyish version of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

You’re able to buy the 16-page zine here for $5. Curtis is only producing 500 copies, so order one now while you still can.

This isn’t the first time Zain Curtis has parodied well-known celebs with his beautiful NSFW drawings. His first project “Solo” profiled Malik after he left One Direction. Soon after, he featured Justin Bieber in the zine titled “Boyfriend.” And most recently, he profiled DJ Khalid in ways you never knew you wanted to see the viral sensation and record producer.

We’re here for it all.
