Hornet Launches Interest-Based Hashtag Feeds
The gay social network just made connecting over shared interests easier than ever
Los Angeles, Calif., Feb 19, 2021 — Hornet, the world’s gay social network with over 30 million users, today announced the launch of Hashtag Feeds, making it easier than ever for gay men to connect over their shared interests.
With this new ability to navigate to hashtag-based “sub-feeds” on Hornet, gay men are able to find like-minded members of the community and connect over shared interests. Hashtags like #workout, #gaymer and #travel have already become popular sub-feeds for Hornet users.
In a recent poll of Hornet users, 57% of respondents said they prefer to pursue their interests mostly with gay men. Those who are publicly ‘out’ are slightly less prone to answer yes, but it’s still the preferred choice of more than a majority (51%).
Hornet also found that among gay men in monogamous relationships, exactly half (50%) prefer to pursue their interests with fellow gay men. (Most others said it wasn’t important to them.) We believe this shows there’s a lot more to being a member of the LGBTQ community than dating; gay men, regardless of their relationship status, appreciate being able to share their experiences with a community that understands and validates them. And indeed, of those guys who already spend “most of their time” with other gay men, most (65%) want to spend even more time with other gay men.
Hornet’s new hashtag feeds are available to all Hornet users immediately by clicking on a hashtag in any post. Also, Hornet users can spark their own “sub-feeds” by using original hashtags, including in their own language, in their own posts.
Popular hashtags on Hornet span the entire spectrum of gay life and friendships — casual meetups and lifelong relationships, political advocacy and personal expression, mental support and sports fans, intellectual chat and pop culture discussions.
Since its inception in 2011, Hornet has continuously innovated in the gay app category with industry firsts, such as Know Your Status (2013) and introducing news articles (2016). In 2018, Hornet prioritized the feed over the traditional grid and, in 2019, made users’ authenticity more visible with the Hornet Badge, awarded by machine learning algorithms. Hornet’s new Video Story format recently broke the 50 million views mark just 100 days after launch, and videos on Hornet currently receive over 10 million views per week, growing 15% week over week.
