As the first trans winner of a Drag Race season, Angele Anang made history when she was crowned “Thailand’s Next Drag Superstar” on Season 2 of Drag Race Thailand. And while her reign has allowed her to share a message of love and inclusivity with Asian admirers, this month she gets to reach an all-new audience: America.
Along with her fellow ‘Top 3’ finalists from her season, Kandy Zyanide and Kana Warrior, Angele Anang will head to New York City for the much-anticipated World Pride 2019.
Hornet sat down with the drag superstar to discuss life after winning the television reality series, and her upcoming inaugural trip to the United States.
HORNET: How has life been since you took home the crown on Drag Race Thailand Season 2? Is it everything you thought it would be? Any surprises?
ANGELE ANANG: I’m having a great time in my career, and I received a lot of opportunities to perform on international stages. It was fun seeing the other side of the world, and I love going with my Top 3 sisters from my season, and visiting my international sisters. It’s been beautiful.
Not only did you win Drag Race Thailand, but you’re the first trans woman to take the crown on any iteration of Drag Race. What significance does that hold for you?
Well, this is what I dreamed for, you know — to be a transgender superstar. But this is way bigger than I ever dreamed of. This is me showing the world what I can do with my gender. So, yes, it’s something I’m pretty proud of.
I know you want to inspire other LGBTQ Asians through your drag. Tell me about that.
Yeah, I want to be an example — telling people that anyone can do and anyone can be whatever they want to be in life.
You’re going to be heading to New York City for World Pride later this month. What are you most looking forward to in NYC? Is it your first time?
Yes! I’m super excited to be in America. It’s crazy that this is actually happening. I just can’t wait to see the people there, especially all the queens and the fans. It’s going to be so fabulous. I will be marching on the Tourism Authority of Thailand float during World Pride. I hope all the fans come join me and my other sisters Kana Warrior and Kandy Zyanide to come march alongside us.
[Editor’s note: The Tourism Authority of Thailand has set up an RSVP page here, and two people can win a trip to Bangkok in 2020!]
Now that you’ve won Drag Race Thailand, what’s next for you?
Right now I want to be on tour performing around the world for a while. And then I would love to shoot for a real acting career on-screen — TV, movies. To let the world see trans women.
Don’t miss Angele Anang, winner of Drag Race Thailand Season 2, in NYC for World Pride 2019.
