Blockchain Technology Is a Secret Weapon in the Fight for Global LGBTQ Equality
As cryptocurrency becomes more visible and accepted in society, different cryptocurrencies have been used in art, used to book flights and have even had pop songs written about them. But cryptocurrency — and more specifically, blockchain technology — can also spur progressive social change in the world. In fact, this Tuesday, May 22, StartOut New York is hosting “Revolutionizing LGBTQ+Equality with Blockchain” at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center to discuss how cryptocurrency and blockchain technology can specifically help the LGBTQ community.
You can buy tickets to the event now — they’re only $10.

The StartOut event, which is sponsored by Hornet, will feature Christof Wittig, Hornet’s co-founder and CEO and chairman of the LGBT Foundation; Maria Sjödin, the Deputy Executive Director of OutRight Action International; and Fabrice Houdart of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The LGBT Foundation, a nonprofit organization supported by Hornet and other apps, is the force behind the LGBT Token, a new cryptocurrency made for the queer community by the queer community. intended to show the estimated $4.6 trillion in LGBT economic power.

Harnessing the power of blockchain technology to help ensure secure transactions, the LGBT Token can help unite the global community and demonstrate our economic power. It’ll also provide a safe, anonymous way for LGBT people to buy goods and services. For example, an LGBT Token user in Chechnya could purchase an airplane ticket to safety without raising any red flags, or it could provide aid directly to an African LGBT organization without passing through the hands of anti-LGBT government officials.
