The Internet Always Delivers: We Can’t Stop Laughing at Why #HimToo Has Been Trending
What would we do without moms, amirite? Even when they embarrass us, you’ve still gotta love ’em. Well, let’s just say that Pieter Hanson — after seeing what his mother posted onto Twitter this past weekend — is maybe having having second thoughts about that sentiment. It was a picture of Hanson decked out in his Navy uniform that had the hashtag #HimToo trending this week, and … well, the story behind it still has us ROFL.
It all started on Saturday, when (presumably well-meaning mother) Marla, mother of Pieter, found herself fed up with the Brett Kavanaugh nomination and Senate approval process. You see, Marla is of the camp who thinks the real victims in all of this talk about sexual assault are the poor, defenseless men of this world who could be falsely accused of sexually harassing a woman.
She took her grief to Twitter with the below tweet (which we have screengrabbed, as Marla’s account has since been removed from the social media platform altogether):
Marla’s tweet reads:
This is MY son. He graduated #1 in boot camp. He was awarded the USO award. He was #1 in A school. He is a gentleman who respects women. He won’t go on solo dates due to the current climate of false sexual accusations by radical feminists with an axe to grind. I VOTE. #HimToo
As you might imagine, Twitter had a downright field day teasing Marla, making fun of her tweet and, as the web does, meme-ing the hell out of it all weekend long, using #HimToo with wild abandon.
Most who chimed in on the ridiculousness of Marla’s post had great fun assuming that in reality her son was a big ol’ flaming homo (the real reason he wasn’t going on “solo dates” with women). And, yeah, the pose in the above photo doesn’t exactly work hard to convince people otherwise.
But now that Navy vet, Pieter Hanson, has chimed in with his own thoughts on his mother’s initial tweet and this #HimToo foolishness.
“It doesn’t represent me at all,” Hanson told the Washington Post. “I love my mom to death, but boy. … I’m still trying to wrap my head around all this.”
That was my Mom. Sometimes the people we love do things that hurt us without realizing it. Let’s turn this around. I respect and #BelieveWomen . I never have and never will support #HimToo . I’m a proud Navy vet, Cat Dad and Ally. Also, Twitter, your meme game is on point. pic.twitter.com/yZFkEjyB6L

Ultimately Hanson felt he had to create a post of his own on Twitter to respond to the #HimToo hubbub. Here’s what he had to say:
That was my Mom. Sometimes the people we love do things that hurt us without realizing it. Let’s turn this around. I respect and #BelieveWomen. I never have and never will support #HimToo. I’m a proud Navy vet, Cat Dad and Ally. Also, Twitter, your meme game is on point.
May this entire ridiculous viral moment be a lesson learned to all the moms out there: Sure, the reason your “Cat Dad” son doesn’t go on solo dates with women could be because he’s scared of evil feminists falsely accusing him of sexual assault. But even then, maybe it’s best not to plaster his face around the web as a representative of the internet’s latest ill-conceived hashtag.
