A ‘Will & Grace’ LEGO Playset Sounds Rad, As Do These 5 Other Ideas Inspired by Queer TV and Film
We’d heard of the proposed LEGO playlets for The Golden Girls and RuPaul’s Drag Race. But Mark Fitzpatrick, creator of the Drag Race playset, recently unveiled his design for a Will & Grace LEGO playset modeled after Will’s apartment in the gay sitcom. Inspired by his design, we came up with five other queer-inspired LEGO playsets we’d love to see.
You can vote for Fitzpatrick’s Will & Grace LEGO playset, to help it become a reality.
“I really wanted to create and share another LGBTQI friendly concept, knowing how important positive, fun representation means to so many in our community,” Fitzpatrick says. “I’ve always enjoyed Will & Grace and think a LEGO set based on this globally-loved, multi-award-winning comedy would make good commercial sense for LEGO and provide hours of building and play fun for fans all around the world.”
Here’s an image of Mark Fitzpatrick’s Will & Grace LEGO playset:
Here are five other possible LEGO playsets based on popular queer film & TV:
1. The ballroom from Pose
Enjoy some Paris is Burning realness from the most trans-inclusive TV show of all time with this ’80s-era New York City ballroom complete with a spectator balcony, floor seats, an emcee podium, stage with judges area and trophy table and the floor where houses can vogue and serve face for the gawds. Naturally, this playset would have to include figurines of color and a sickening array of couture fashions, darling.
2. Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s castle from The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Let’s do the time warp again in the camp horror castle of the rapey Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his gender-bending Transylvanians. It could feature a creepy vestibule, the ballroom with the throne, an elevator leading to the lab. which would have gadgets like the deep freeze and the Medusa beam. It would also have a floor show theatre with a hidden pool under the stage and figurines for Rocky, Brad, Janet, Magenta, Dr. Scott and Columbia — don’t dream it, be it.
3. Priscilla, the bus from The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert
What better way to explore the Australian outback than in the Budget Barbie Camper known as “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert“?
With a mirror ball, curtains and bedspreads covered in zebra print, dressing tables and lots of room for storing booze, costumes and a giant silver high heeled-shoe, you can take Tick, Bernadette and Adam rock-climbing, camping with Aborigines or performing for homophobes at local watering holes.
Admittedly, we’d also love it if someone developed a LEGO playset of the 1967 Cadillac DeVille Convertible from To Wong Foo (complete with figurines for Miss Noxeema Jackson, Vida Boheme and Chi-Chi Rodriguez). Ooooh, or Hedwig’s trailer/stage from the “Wig in a Box” song from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
4. Armand’s nightclub and apartment from The Birdcage
Birds of a feather can dine together in this two-level playset inspired by the modern update of La Cage Aux Folles. There’s the fabulous Miami drag bar downstairs where Starina and her starlets put on their amazing nightly revue and upstairs, there’s the nightclub owner’s apartment above.
The apartment would have an array of removable gaudy furnishings and a giant crucifix for when the conservative in-laws visit. Also, the figurine for Albert — Armand’s lover — would have four sets of clothes to switch between his turns as Starina, Val’s “mother,” Uncle Al and himself.
Another great apartment possibility would be Auntie Mame‘s Manhattan home with its sweeping grand staircase, hydraulic couches, Asian decor and rolling martini cart.
5. 28 Barbary Lane, the complex from Tales of the City
Seeing as Armistead Maupin‘s groundbreaking Tales of the City is about to get its own 2019 Netflix miniseries, there’s never been a better time to go back to Anna Madrigal’s colorful apartment complex. The multi-level complex would have its trademark lychgate entrance, a beautiful garden featuring Madrigal’s marijuana bush (and tiny “welcome joints” taped to each apartment’s door jamb) and the “pent-shack” studio apartment on the roof.
In addition to the Misses Madrigal figurine, there’d also be ones for San Francisco newcomer Mary Anne, Michael “Mouse” Tolliver and maybe even Jake Greenleaf, the complex’s trans Latino gardener.
